    VT Boundaries

    I am trying to use a VT boundary in order to apply a velocity to a fixed depth of water in a flume type model (20m by 100m) in order to achieve specific Reynolds numbers. In my results I am observing half the velocity in the model that I am applying at the boundary. Can anyone help me with why this might be happening? Many thanks, Claire

  3. We are currently using TUFLOW to model a complex bridge in an estuary to obtain velocities around the piers. We are planning to use models on a number of scales in order to do this however this question relates specifically to the use of TUFLOW for models where the depth of water significantly exceeds the 2D cell size. We are currently considering how we will approach this however in order to sufficiently represent the complexity of the structure we are considering a 2D cell size of 0.25m. The water depth is approximately 4m. In Section 2.5 the TUFLOW manual has the following statement: "Caution may be needed when using very small 2D cell sizes, particularly when the flow depth is significantly larger than the cell width (Barton 2001). Modelling on a very fine grid (<1m), especially in deep water, may start to violate the assumptions of 2D solutions based on the Shallow Water Equations. CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) codes that model the turbulence and other terms much more accurately may be needed in these situations. The influence of the viscosity (sub-grid scale turbulence) term can be particularly relevant in these situations. However, testing of models with very fine cell sizes (down to 0.1m) has indicated that reliable results can be obtained. There seems to be a trend indicating that slightly higher Viscosity Coefficient maybe justified of up to 0.5 using the Smagorinsky Viscosity Formulation, which is the preferred (and default) approach." I have found and read Barton 2001 but would be interested to find out more about the testing of models with very fine cell sizes as mentioned above and guidance on how Viscosity Coefficients might be chosen and subsequently justified.
  4. Hi Phillip, Yes I'm using QGIS, as Matt says I've got around it by saving as a new shape file but after a while this stops working too (hence my dispair on Friday). I have resorted to saving the file out as a mif and without any alteration to the file the model runs fine. Whilst investigating shape file errors it worth noting I've had Error 0423 and Error 0425 on shape files edited using QGIS. Claire
  5. What does "ERROR 0408 - End of .dbf file encountered whilst reading record" actually mean and how can I fix it / avoid it happening everytime I edit my shape file? Its driving me to distraction! Claire

    Now that TUFLOW writes the Time of Maximum water level to a separate .dat file is it possible to get TUFLOW to add the _Times.dat to the list of files included in the ALL.sup? Claire

  8. I've been experimenting with alternative GIS software and found that you can't write empty GIS files other than in MID/MIF format, consulting the manual it says ... "Similar commands for .shp formats will be available in a future release" Any ideas on when this might be?

    Thanks Bill A note for anyone else is that in SMS 9.0 it was under Edit, Current Coordinates... Now I just need to share the information with the rest of the office Claire

  11. Since 31st March I've not been recieving email notifications on new topics or topics I've created/replied to. So when I happened to look at the forum today I was surprised to find replies to some of my topics! I've not altered anything in my settings as far as I'm aware. Is anyone else having this problem?

    Velocity output from TUFLOW are in m/s (taken from appendix page A14 of the manual) The SMS legend default however shows ft/s which is incorrect. This can be temporarily altered by going to Display Options - Vectors - Legend Options - And altering the value in Legend Units. I've not managed to change it permanently. Claire

  14. Ooh first post in this section of the forum! Anyhow, I was wondering how the the TUFLOW error code wiki(or similiar) was coming along? We were just talking about it in the office so thought I'd ask. Claire
  15. We’ve had to move a model between modelling machines. Unfortunately, I can no longer get the model to run, although I haven’t made any changes to it since it was running ok on two other machines. The error message in the tlf says: Reading any fixed-field control channel data... Reading Special Channels (BG, WR, CV, etc)... ...Reading temporary control channel data file ...Closing temporary control channel data file ...Closed File Unit: 929 ERROR 1025 - Number of culvert channels and CV details not the same. ...Finished. ERRORS found in 1D input data. The new computer we’re using has TUFLOW build: 2010-10-AA-iSP-w32, while the two computers that the model runs ok on have TUFLOW build: 2009-07-AE-iSP. The 2010 version of TUFLOW is obviously checking for something that the 2009 version didn't however I can pinpoint what? Claire Edited to add .TLF is not attached as forum doesn't permit the upload of this type of file Edited again to say I changed the extention to .TXT and here it is! HCL_BB_DEFENDED_100YR_V6_3.txt
