Alternatives to UltraEdit

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Whilst UltraEdit is a great text editor, it isn't the only one around. For TUFLOW modelling the following are desirable attributes for text editor:

  • Syntax Highlighting (Colour Coding)
  • Running TUFLOW using open file
  • Ability to open file from relative path (e.g. ..\model\geometry_001.tgc)

The following alternatives are also used for TUFLOW modelling:

Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus-plus.org/)

Textpad (see http://www.textpad.com/)

There are syntax highlighting files for both of these packages available for download on the TUFLOW website (http://www.tuflow.com/ProductDownload.aspx). Thanks to EA and Halcrow for the Textpad TUFLOW syntax file and Edenvale Young for the Notepad++ TUFLOW syntax file.

There are also some instructions on setting these up on the TUFLOW Wiki (links below).

Wiki Links

Notepad++ (see http://wiki.tuflow.com/index.php?title=NotepadPlusPlus_Tips)

Textpad (http://wiki.tuflow.com/index.php?title=TextPad_Tips)

Please let us know if there are any others that you use.

Regards

Phillip

I installed the xml file for colour coding in notepad++ but it does not remain as the default language when other tgc, tcf etc files are loaded. It has to be selected each time. How do I set it as the default?

Never mind, I was using the TUFLOW_FV colouring xml, and not the TUFLOW colouring xml. It works as the default now.

Hi All,

If you haven’t checked it out before the Runme plugin for Notepad++ is pretty handy for running batch files.

It will also allow you to open a windows explorer window in the file location directory, which is nice.

You can access install and access it through the Notepad++ ‘Plugin Manager’.
